Greater Englewood Neighborhood Association

Hello Englewood!!

It is always exciting to begin a New Year.

Thank you for your support and encouragement as I have accepted the role as your Vice President for the 2010 year.

With this in mind, I am coming to you for your help.  First of all, by taking the role of Vice President, a chair has opened for Membership. I have enjoyed getting to know our meeting attendees each month. As membership chair I was able to bring new ideas to GENA for record keeping and also trying to assist you in learning your neighbor’s names by making name badges. This has been a very rewarding experience. If you are interested in getting to know your neighbors better and have some time to commit to your neighborhood, PLEASE consider talking with me about taking the position of membership chair.

We are coming up on an exciting meeting Monday night and hope that you will find value in Mark Patrick’s presentation. Please come and show your support of our neighborhood! We have moved social time to 6:30pm. The meeting will still begin at 7. Also just a friendly reminder – we are collecting items for our troops. Please bring what you can.

Finally I urge you to become a part of this wonderful organization. I know we all have busy schedules, but we hope you can find time once a month to join us at our meeting and also to always keep an eye out around your neck of the woods. We would LOVE for you to join our organization and be part of your Neighborhood Association. GENA is only as good as those who support, guide, direct and participate. The fee is very nominal – we hope you will consider.

We look forward to this year!

Always feel free to contact any of us for more information on becoming a member or how you can volunteer.

Best regards,

Mandy Butler

Vice President

Dear Friends:

Earlier today I, along with Council President Richard Clark, announced the city’s plan to actively engage citizens in this year’s budget process.  Through the launch of a new Web site, dedicated solely to the budget process, and the creation of community budget workshops, it is my hope that citizens find these tools helpful ways to contribute to the budget conversation. Each year when we begin the conversation about our city’s budget, it is always our goal to engage a broad number of citizens and solicit their input in every step of that process.  This year, we are beginning that discussion earlier, with a greater emphasis on transparency.
Please visit the Web site at http://www.myjaxbudget.com.  There you will find information about the budget process, the city’s revenue and expenses, along with the services that government provides and how much it costs to provide them.
As part of this effort you are also invited to attend one of six budget workshops and engage in dialogue with other citizens and city leaders about government services.  You will also be asked to provide feedback about your own priorities for government services.  With the help of Jacksonville Community Council Inc., data collected at each budget workshop will be compiled and a report highlighting the results of the workshops will be posted on the Web site.
Because seats are limited, those interested in attending the workshops must register in advance by visiting the Web site or by calling (904) 630-2747.

Through informed citizen participation, elected leaders will have a better understanding of how to prioritize spending, provide services and move the city towards a prosperous future.

Sincerely,

John Peyton

Mayor

MARCH 2010   PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Greetings to all GENA members and interested web site viewers.

I hope you're surviving this horrid weather and know spring is on the way (when it gets good and ready).  At our last meeting on February 8th, the meeting room was almost full.  We appreciate our members coming out and showing their support.  This means a great deal to the Officers and Board Members since we get our energy from you.  At this meeting, I was approached by a member who said, "I just wish I could get out and volunteer but my disability prevents me from doing so."  My response was to tell her she pays her dues, attends all of our meetings and that is giving quality time for GENA.

So often we do not wish to leave our safety zones, especially at night, so we miss out on things.  I encourage everyone to come out and support this wonderful organization.

Our March meeting brings us Ronald Littlepage of the Florida Times Union.  His subject will be announced later, so come to the meeting and find out what it is.  Hopefully, he will be writing positive things about our Association.  It could be, if we have only a half filled room, he will be disappointed. In addition to Mr. Littlepage, "Woodmen of The World" will be present and door prizes given out.  This always fun, and you may be lucky.

Most of the street pavement has been completed, and I must say It's wonderful to ride on street that are smooth and pothole free.  Vehicles were taking a beating, especially Turner Ave which was just horrible.  One did not know if, at any given time, Turner was going to turn into one gigantic sink hole.  Those that live on Turner and off of Turner Clinton who drove through, are most appreciative.

There are folks I wish to mention who represent our Organization at two of our most important meetings.  One is Vickie Kutscher, our representative at CPAC, and the other is our representative at Shadco. Ms. Martha Shirko.  If you wish to attend a meeting you are most definitely encouraged to do so.  If you wish to report any criminal activities bring your concers to Ms Shirko who will bring these concerns to the Police.  To learn more, please see the above mentioned representatives at our meeting.

We are off and running this year, but our membership seems to be lagging.  I urge you to renew your membership dues, we need them.  We will be having a Membership Drive on March 20th going throughout the Englewood area educating our residents about GENA.  We are asking volunteers to meet us and we will fan out from there.  Information, will be forthcoming as to the time and place to meet.  Members with limitations are urged to talk to your neighborhs about GENA and get them signed up.  By having a large membership gives to us a stronger voice in speaking on behalf of Englewood.  In addition, folks be much more aware of their surroundings and are committed to having a much improved Englewood.

We're thinking of having another Yard Sale or a Festival this spring so please let let us know your thoughts and ideas.  GENA could certainly utilize the money earned in a productive Yard Sale or maybe you prefer a Festival.. We have an "Ideas and Suggestions" box on our membership table at each meeting.  I encourage you to use it.

About refreshments at meetings: We have attempted a couple of methods of providing.  One method was a collection taken at meetings but, unfortunately, it was not enough.  As a result, GENA ended up paying a good portion from the treasury.  This had to cease.  Since then we have had the same folks bringing and providing the  meof methods for providing the snack for each of our meetings and this time we had only two sign up to bring the snacks. If this is not something the memberhsip is interested in, please let us know and we will cease trying to provide refreshments.  If you are interested and can participate, please see Ms. Alice Fletcher.  Other wise, if we have no sign ups, we will cease after next month.

In closing, I thank each and everyone for your support and look forward to seeing you on march 8th at Cuba Hunter Park. Cuba Hunter Park.

Litter Day in Englewood

Saturday, June 13th, dawned bright and hot and at 9:00 a.m. five very gallant brave soldiers met at the Circle and begin what is known as Litter Patrol.  These brave soldiers who endured the heat were Billie and Lowell Griffith, Gerald Harper and Tom Roycraft and of course myself.  Time after time these folks have soldiered on, and I am so proud to know these fine people who come religiously rain or shine, cold or heat.
I am so sorry we have so little interest from our members in doing litter patrol, as it would certainly make a difference. With more support we would be able to attend to a much larger area as well as have completed the task long before that ole sun got up so high.
Due to the heat and other factors we will no longer be having litter patrol through the summer's hot months.  Depending on the support and the interest we will determine at a later date, whether to continue on through the year.  To Billie and Lowell and Gerald and Tom, we indeed thank you for all you do.  Jh
